Pre-empting a law allowing Spanish publications to charge Google News if their content is shown on the site, Google announced it will shut down the service in Spain before the law comes into effect.
BBC: Google to shut Spanish news service
No wonder they’ve had enough. First it was a Spanish legal case which ended by the bizarre EU ruling that Google must censor links to articles which themselves need not be censored. Now it’s Spanish publishers who are too greedy to be content to have traffic to their sites increased by appearing in Google results. Only I suspect they’ve just shot themselves in the foot. It would serve them right. In a country where 69% of the population identify as Catholics they should know that avarice is one of the seven deadly sins.
