Occasionally, it pays off to be telephone-phobic. When they informed me about an appointment two weeks later at 2 West Regent Street at a time for which I was scheduled to be on my way from one job in Stirling to another in Falkirk, I didn’t call there to rearrange it. I went there as soon as I could, and lo and behold, the doctor had the time to examine me immediately.
An unrelated thought just entered my head . . . It seems to me that among native speakers, I’m nowadays spending more time talking to medical people than to any other category.
